We would like to share with you the publication of the new Quercus Propagation Manual, titled Quercus Propagation Manual: An easy and quick guide to growing oaks in Mexico and Central America, edited by Dr. Maricela Rodríguez-Acosta and Dr. Allen J. Coombes, from the University Botanical Garden of the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla, Mexico. The manual — in Spanish — includes an introduction to the Quercus genus, its ecological, cultural and commercial importance, as well as, different steps to follow for the propagation of oaks. Methods for the collection and storage of acorns, advice for germination and vegetative propagation by cuttings and other methods such as plant tissue are described. There are also chapters on the variations in oak populations in Mexico and Central America. Finally, there are fundamentals and recommendations for oak conservation.
This manual is a result of a coordinated group effort with experts of the Quercus genus in Mexico and Central America, who, together with the collaboration with and contribution of the Global Trees Conservation Program of the Morton Arboretum, the University Botanical Garden of the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla, Botanic Gardens Conservation International, The Global Trees Campaign and Fondation Franklinia have made this publication possible.
We hope that this manual will be an indispensable tool for all those interested in restoring and conserving the magnificent oak forests and their rich ecosystems in Mexico and Central America.
